Research Update!

Good Afternoon! Today was an absolutely wonderful day! I feel as if I am on top of the world. The Yorktown Central School Districts Deputy Superintendent has given me permission to send out my survey to the district's teachers. She has also given me permission to interview several teachers who wish to volunteer their time. I even had one person take the survey today! Not only did he take the survey, but he also let me interview him! I have to thank Mr. Carrig for kick starting my summer research :)

Mr. Carrig
10th and 12th Grade
Social Studies Teacher
Yorktown High School
Mr. Carrig is a 10th and 12th grade Social Studies teacher in Yorktown High School. He teaches both the General Ed. population as well as the Special Ed. population in an integrated co-teaching class with Mr. Egan. He teaches 55 students in total. One class of 28 and another with 27. Mr. Carrig uses the iPad in the classroom daily, mostly for regents review, QR code quests around the room, response clickers, and embedded Powerpoint Presentations.

Some of the apps Mr. Carrig uses on the iPad are: onlive desktop, edmodo, nearpod, doceri, khanacademy, educreations, aurasma(my new favorite!), scannerpro, keynote, pages, itunesu, dropbox, ibooks, googledrive, notability, goodnotes, and socrative. His personal favorite app is nook because he loves reading just as much as he loves teaching!

Mr. Carrig is also an active Web 2.0 user in the classroom. He has a very active twitter account for his Global 2 History students, a class Facebook, a class Drop box, tumbler, and itunesu

When I asked Mr. Carrig if he used the SMARTboard or if he liked using it, he replied with an interesting answer. He said he used it a lot in the beginning of his teaching career, but then he started to realize that the students he was working with were not engaged in the games and prompts the SMARTboard had to offer. He said, this technology is geared more towards elementary teachers and students. He is an avid MAC user and loves everything you can do in the classroom with the MAC laptop, iPhone, and iPad.

It was a pleasure meeting with Mr.Carrig today. I learned a great deal from him and I definitely have some more research to do on certain apps! Stay tuned for two more interviews tomorrow with Mrs. Froats (Math) and Mr. Fritz (Environmental Science)!
